The process of cleaning a chimney has not really changed since Victorian times - the main difference (except for a black sooty layer left everywhere) being that a vacuum is used at the same time as the brushes:

• The fireplace/stove is sealed up with a sheet and the vacuum and brush rods are worked through it. As the soot falls down the vacuum removes it
• The chimney is then tested for "spillage" - this is a smoke test to ensure the chimney is "drawing" properly
• The chimney is then subjected to a complete visual inspection, both in and outside
• Terminals are checked to see if they are the correct type
• All the findings are then written down onto a certificated report for your reference

The process is clean and fairly quick and, for some, a trip down memory lane!

It is not commonly known, but most buildings insurance policies require this report as proof of the annual service of the appliance it serves, and can invalidate policies if not produced when requested.

Our cleaning is carried in accordance with BS 6461 using brushes and a vac, it is a clean process and takes around half an hour.

Other areas checked during the sweep are:

• The condition of the stack
• The terminal/pots (correct ones fitted)
• The vent/up draught
• The deposits removed
